A video podcast (sometimes referred to as videocasts, vidcasts or vodcasts) is a great way to connect with your audience. Combining the benefits of an audio podcast with a more visual experience, a video podcast allows your audience to not only hear you but to also see you. This can have a strong impact. The best news is that even the smallest of businesses with a limited budget can create an effective video podcast.
Here are six steps to help you produce your first video podcast.
1. Purchase/Borrow Equipment – you’ll need a video camera. There is no need to purchase a $10,000 professional camcorder. Many smaller devices including cameras or even some phones now include HD video. You can look into purchasing a better quality camcorder, a tri-pod, an external microphone, etc. if you find yourself producing a lot of video podcasts.
Besides a way to take the video, you will need a way to edit the video. Many devices come with editing software that you can download on your computer. Also, most PC’s come with Movie Maker and Macs with iMovie. There are also a lot of free downloads available on the web. Again, if you want to get a little more professional, try using a more advanced program like Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro.
2. Develop A Plan/Outline – a video podcast should not be a commercial, instead it should be a transparent informational, educational, or entertaining piece. You should start by developing a plan – who is your audience, what is your goal, what is the call to action. Next come up with an outline and bullet out your talking points. We typically recommend to clients not to script out the entire piece. This could make it less authentic. However, with that being said, it is very important to have an idea of what you are looking achieve before turning on the camera.
3. Shoot Your Video – Find a spot that doesn’t have too much background noise and that has decent lighting. Depending on your audience and the tone of the podcast the speaker could be sitting, standing, or even on the move. Realize that you will probably need to film a few takes of the same thing. You want to try and get through either the entire podcast or a section of the podcast without too much editing being needed. Depending on your goals, a video podcast should usually be between 90 seconds to five minutes max.
4. Edit Your Video – This is the point where you can add titles, graphics, background music, etc. You can also fix any problems in the video and put the best talking points together. When editing, find something that you can use in between your cuts – maybe insert a picture of what the subject is talking about or a title screen. This way viewers won’t notice that the subject had their hand up and then all of a sudden the hand was on his or her hip. Using transitional pieces, allows for a much smoother end product.
5. Host Your Video – You’ll need to find a host (a home) for you video podcast. It can link directly on your website or to a hosting service like YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, Yahoo Video, etc.
6. Promote Your Video – Now that your video is up you need to tell the world (or at least your selected audience) about it. Make sure to share your video via your social networking sites, your website, and by using SEO. The more you share it, and the more you ask others to share it the better chance you have of achieving your results.
