Why Local Media Shouldn’t be Overlooked

When you’re looking to spread the word about your company, product or service, every placement you get is equally as important. Whether it be the local online website or the regional daily newspaper, the point is to get your name out there and create a buzz about what you’re doing. Here are a few reasons why local media shouldn’t be overlooked.

  • More likely than not, your local media will be able to and be more interested in covering your news. Local media is always looking for story ideas and angles with a local flair. By offering yourself as a resource that is not only well qualified, but also right there in that community, it is a win-win for the media contact. And, the more you develop a rapport with that media person as the local go-to reference, the more you, your business or your product/service will be highlighted in the news.
  • People do business with people they like. It may sound silly, but it’s certainly a true statement. If you’re reading about a local business in your local weekly paper, you tend to feel like you know that business or person because you live in the same area, which means you frequent the same restaurants, go to the same places, are equally involved in the same community initiatives. This may not be the case, but that community feeling is there regardless of whether it is true or not. Why not call the guy down the street rather than two towns over! By being featured in your local media, your fellow neighbors will feel an instant connection.
  • You never know where your next big win could come from. It could be from someone reading the local paper or watching the local news. Local media is just as important as national media when you’re trying to grow your business.

So when you’re out there pitching your story or business to the media, be sure to include your local contacts on your media list too. You’ll be happy you did!
